Today the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs presented the ten finalists for the second National Icon competition. In this competition, an initiative from the cabinet, a jury led by Hans Wijers selects the most ground-breaking innovations in the Netherlands. National Icons develop technological solutions for societal challenges, such as climate change, ageing, food waste and animal welfare.
This is the second time that this competition is being organised. Out of 65 submissions the jury picked ten candidates for the title National Icon. Other finalists are, amongst others, the National Institute of Ecology, REDstack and Groasis. After a second presentation before the jury next week, the cabinet of the Netherlands will select one, two or three companies that will become National Icon. National Icons will receive high-level ministerial support during three years, which means a personal ambassador, access to a large international network and a lot of attention.
The winners of this year’s competition will be announced in the fall of 2016. A specific date has not been announced yet. Please follow us on Twitter or Facebook to keep up to date. You can relive today’s starting event by watching the video on Periscope (in Dutch).
