The Food Heroes project started a contest to search for Food Heroes and their food waste solutions. 76 Food Heroes submitted new products and waste reduction technologies. A five-person jury, chaired by EU-commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis, selected the top-three Food Heroes in the different categories for the finale at CFIA Expo 2019 in Rennes, France. CFIA Expo is the leading annual fair for food technology suppliers in Europe. A winner will be selected in each of the three categories: fruits & vegetables, male animals, and fish & seafood. In Ovo’s in ovo sexing solution minimizes food waste by preventing the unnecessary killing of newborn male animals. Instead, the male eggs that are taken out of production can be used for other products and solutions. A project performed by us in 2017 and 2018 has shown that there are several very interesting solutions for utilization of the leftover eggs. Currently, we are investigating what the best way to proceed is.

Help us get more attention for the day-old male chicken problem and vote for In Ovo at the Food Heroes Award. With our solution, we can prevent the global killing of billions of male chicks just because they do not produce eggs and are slow meat producers. This will lead to a big improvement in resource efficiency and a huge leap in animal welfare in hatcheries. Last summer, we received new funding for the development of our egg sexing device and are currently working every day to fulfill our promise.
