We are on a mission – To put an end to chick culling

Back in 2011, our founders Wil and Wouter were faced with the culling of day-old chicks for the first time – an issue that has stayed with them ever since. Founded as a company in 2013, In Ovo was created with one goal in mind: to prevent the hatching of male chicks which would otherwise be killed.
Since then, we have spent a lot of time researching and developing our solution, called Ella, and other innovations that improve animal welfare and sustainability in the poultry sector. We use cutting-edge technology that can be seamlessly integrated into existing hatcheries. The hatcheries can concentrate on their chicks, while we focus on the solutions.
A joint responsibility
The world population is growing and demand for food is increasing. The poultry industry plays an increasingly significant role in helping to feed the world and responding to the challenges. Global egg production has shown impressive growth: from 63 million tonnes in 2009 to 93 million tonnes in 2022. That’s almost 1500 billion eggs!
But we must take responsibility for producing sustainably and with respect for animals. With the help of our team, we want to make sure this happens. We are already having a positive impact on millions of chicks thanks to Ella, which allows us to determine the sex of an egg instead of a chick. This ensures only females are hatched and male eggs are removed, thereby preventing the culling of male chicks.

ESG – We believe it matters
ESG – it’s short for Environmental, Social, and Governance. They may sound like fancy corporate buzzwords, but they are way more important than that.
Because every company has an impact on the world. And so does In Ovo. By monitoring our ESG properly, we can understand where we stand and how we can improve. This not only benefits the planet and society, but also makes our company stronger and more future-proof.
We believe that companies that ace ESG don’t just do good – they do better. So at In Ovo, we’re not only commited to end chick culling, but we are also paying a lot of attention to ESG.
